The Winter 2019 fashion trends to follow

What’s new for next winter? Plenty. Easywear continues to be big, we’ll still be wrapping up warm in cozy clothes that make us feel safe, but for 2018 comfort will also mean an eclectic succession of familiar pieces, that are also fail-safe in the style stakes.

On this occasion, checks share protagonism with the animal print. Zebra, tiger, snake or crocodile join the classic leopardBoth checks and animal prints are far from discretion. This autumn-winter the most important thing is to combine them to shine, either with statement garments such as coats or jackets or with more than one piece in the same look.

The materials: leather, tweed, velvet, knit … and silk

The fall-winter fashion shows are filled with the usual fabrics: knit, wool, velvet, leather or tweed. These fabrics remind us that the cold has reached our closets

Layering is front and center for next winter, with plays on texture and volume in a masterful game of accumulation. Balenciaga gave the illusion of nine layered items worn at once, playing with trompe-l’œil extremes to take on the arctic cold. At Chanel, layering was more discrete, with an updated hoodie worn over a padded jacket, over a dress. Prada went for a night-bright, multi-layered vision that was seen by Miuccia Prada as so many layers of protection for women.

A style: the vintage

The 60’s, 70’s and 80’s have influenced the collections of many of the designers for the upcoming fall-winter season. We can see that in the forms, ruffles, puff sleeves, prints… From the hippy touches to a lady like style, the designs look to the past.

Florals of all kinds were given an update for the new season, in all-over prints on maxi and mini lengths that stayed just the right side of chic. A look that could easily take over next winter.

Now you know how to dress this wintertime.

Reviews about New York Fashion Week

“Ralph Lauren is the father of American sportswear. The very notion of a lifestyle brand started with him. Indeed, in the five decades since he began, he has managed to export the allure of a nation in a way no other American fashion brand has been able to. And the emotional resonance of his designs was more palpable than ever tonight. The designer took a victory lap with tears in his eyes, and there was barely a dry eye in the house.” —Chioma Nnadi

The Row

The-Row-Fall-2013-New-York-Fashion-Week

“Spring 2019 is about the careful and considered progression of the extreme volume play that the Olsens have been so beautifully considering these past few seasons, with much emphasis on exploring every kind of silk fabrication, quiet handwork (witness the gorgeous creamy white tweedy coat with the frayed edges rendered by nimble fingers), and all presented in a palette that gracefully arcs from ivory to sand, to charcoal, to black. If fashion elsewhere is going full throttle into anything and everything that’s quote-unquote new, here the art of gentle recalibration is at work—a nudge forward that only underscores that these are clothes that are the absolute antithesis of fast.” —Mark Holgate

Gabriela Hearst

19-tastemaker-Gabi-Hearst.w710.h473.2x“First, the tailoring: Gabriela Hearst has become the New York resource for a serious, expertly cut pantsuit as other labels here and in Europe succumb to ornamentation and frivolity. Her suits often come in a surprising color, like bordeaux or blush pink, or a novel fabric such as metallic linen, but this season’s most striking was cut single-breasted with slim trousers in dark navy silk wool. Her dresses, meanwhile, ran the gamut, from sleek and sporty tanks in color-blocked cashmere to an hourglass evening number embroidered in freshwater pearls. What you didn’t see were any of the florally, frilly—sloppy, even—dresses produced by so many other labels these days. Hearst is true to her minimal deluxe aesthetic.” —Nicole Phelps
